Baby strollers are uniquely challenging to purchase, since there are hundreds of choices of dozens of brand names and price ranges, and every parent wants the perfect one for their child.
Certainly, they’ve come a long way since the wirey baby carriages of the 1960’s and 1970’s, but imagine how long baby transportation has come since the development of the first pram in 1733 by William Kent as a special request from the Duke of Devonshire. It was originally designed to be pulled by a pony and beautifully made for the client. It wasn’t until the 1830’s and 1840’s when baby carriages became popular in the United States, with patents being granted to the father and son Crandall team.
Baby carriages were the mainstream choice for over a century until Owen Maclaren, an aeronautical engineer, redesigned the carriage and created what would become the modern foldable baby stroller in 1965.
I’ll admit that I had no interest in spending any time shopping for strollers, so my wife did all the work. As she usually does with the important items, she researched thoroughly for what appeared to be months for each of the strollers we purchased. Whether it was our first baby carriage, the subsequent toddler stroller and finally the dual BOB Duallie Revolution, she managed to get the perfect stroller in each circumstance.
