Learning SIght Words Meet the Sight Words Book Series

Learning sight words can be very difficult and frustrating for first time readers, but Meet the Sight Words books by Kathy Oxley from the Preschool Prep Company, LLC in Danville, California offers an exceptional line of sight words educational materials including their 3 DVD series, flash cards and 3 Meet the Sight Words practice books.

My wife ordered Meet the Sight Words Level 2 set of books in preparation for our son's fourth birthday, which is 5 months away!! But one afternoon she decided to try a photo shoot for this website a try when our son escaped the play room and ran around the house before noticing mommy taking pictures of this amazing set of books!

He immediately recognized the characters from the learning sight words DVD series he and his sister have watched and exhausted. They started watching the DVDs when he was about two and a half years old and his sister was 14 months. Every night while bathing them, they would continually request to watch one of these videos and sometimes even all three. This happened over a period of several months as they absorbed and memorized each word - the both of them learning sight words while being entertained!

Once they had finished learning, spelling, reading and re-watching the DVDs, they began commenting on the videos' surrounding images which are somewhat abstract. Ultimately, they exhausted the series and now only watch it every once in a while as background sound and imagery.

Since those DVDs, our kids read them and recognize them in books and other materials, and our boy writes them on his Doodle. The confidence they get from learning sight words has also inspired them to read other words and even decode words by following the Leap Frog videos.

So when he found this set of books, mom could not hold them from him and she gave in and allowed the boy to briefly view the books with the intention of hiding them until his birthday.

Immediately he began to read the books from front cover to back! All of them! My wife and I watched in amazement as our boy's face was filled with his signature proud smile - the one where he has this sinister look as if he knows he's figured something out.

The series of books makes learning sight words possible through the use of progressive practice books filled with familiar colorful characters as well as very large and bold text. Each level comes with 12 books encased in a hard cover case. The books themselves are soft covered with soft paper pages and are not meant for younger hands, like our daughter who likes to shred books for some reason!

Each level progresses with more and more sight words, with level one containing 16 of the most used sight words, level 2 with 32 sight words and level 3 with 47 sight words. The sight words do overlap, so if you're interested in getting just one lesson, go for lesson 3.

In addition to sight words, the books contain other words that work as a story within sentences. They are words that require simple decoding, and your child will get a great sense of accomplishment once they decode the word. At the very least, all non sight words have are accompanied by a representative graphic with the characters on the preceeding page.

Level 1 features the following sight words: a, and, for, have, he, I, in, is, it, of, play, said, that, the, to & you

In level 2, the sight words included are: a, and, are, as, but, for, go, had, have, he, here, his, I, in, is, it, like, my, of, on, play, said, see, she, that, the, they, to, was, we, with & you with Top 20 Fry Instant Words and Top 20 Dolch Instant Words.

And Level 3 contains: a, and, all, are, as, at, be, but, by, for, from, go, had, have, he, her, here, him, his, I, in, is, it, like, look, my, of, on, one, or, play, said, see, some, she, that, the, there, they, this, to, up, was, we, with, word & you with Top 30 Fry Instant Words and Top 30 Dolch Instant Words.

There are some complaints about ordering these lessons electronically for the Kindle or iPad in which the levels roll into each other without interruption, making lesson selection difficult. There is a general sense that the physical books are much more preferred.

We only bought the physical set of Level 2, but after watching our soon read them so easily, my wife decided to order Level 3 and hold off on the photo shoot until after his birthday, 5 months from now!

Along with the DVD series, learning sight words with Meet the Sight Words books will give your children a level of confidence that will really amaze you. Though sight words recognition is not actual reading, the accomplishment our children experience with this series has elevated their educational expectations, and they constantly seek out reading and learning opportunities well beyond the Meet the Sight Words collection.
