Leona Lewis Spirit

Leona Lewis Spirit

Leona Lewis Spirit is the debut album she created under Clive Davis’ J Records label after winning the third season of The X Factor in 2006. Lewis signed a $9.7 million dollar contract and released the album on November 2007, gaining critical acclaim, multi-platinum status and three Grammy Award nominations.

Leona Louise Lewis was born on April 3, 1985 to an Irish-Italian family in the borough of Islington, London. Since early on, she wanted to be a singer and a songwriter, learning to play instruments like the guitar and piano, and attended the Sylvia Young Theater School, Italia Conti Academy and the BRIT School.

She created several demo albums and signed with UEG Entertainment but had little success. She decided to return to her studies when her boyfriend convinced her to enter The X Factor, cutting all ties with UEG Entertainment and eventually landing her international fame.

She followed Spirit with her second album in November of 2009, Leona Lewis Echo

Leona Lewis Echo, which continued Lewis’ momentum but did not claim the success of Spirit. Her next release is scheduled for 2011 and Lewis claims it will be different than the first two albums with unexpected surprises.

Leona Lewis Spirit was on our eldest girl’s 2009 Christmas list, among a wide variety of wishes. I had not heard of Leona Lewis and asked my wife for a little bit of direction, but she didn’t know either. So I began looking her up, just to make sure she wasn’t too offensive or inappropriate. I searched through the usual online channels and listened to her MP3 samples on amazon.

What I found was relatively mild and inoffensive. Her music is soft and a bit sleepy for me, but what I was most concerned about was her topics of adult romance including scorn and personal remorse. Instead of coming down heavy about these topics, we spoke to our girl briefly about what she sings about and joked a bit that she was growing into a dark romantic. She smiled and took it lightly, but we believe it sunk in.

More revealing was the absence of the follow up album Echo, which promised to be more upbeat with livelier guitar music, but the momentum of The X Factor may have slowed down for a bit, at least in our home.
