The Fisher-Price Doodle Pro

Doodle Pro

The Fisher-Price Doodle Pro is a great classic learning toy originally developed by Tyco from 1974 through 1998 when the manufacturing rights were sold to Fisher-Price.

Recommended for children 3 to 8, the simple concept utilizes a magnetic stylus to attract and maintain tiny magnetic particles on a magnetophoretic display panel until the drawn image is erased by a sliding eraser bar. Such a simple idea saves paper and keeps things clean while being portable, educational and fun.

As a learning toy, what the Fishr-Price Doodle does so well is help kids process and practice what they’ve learned from their parents, preschool or other educational toys and videos. They can experiment and make mistakes, as well as draw great pictures and successfully spell words.

Another great function is that it also acts as a teaching tool for parents. When we draw items like flowers and butterflies, our 15 month old laughs and says, “fower, bufly” with cuteness and excitement. She’s since learned how to scribble and even use the eraser bar to clear the panel and continue drawing. At 20 months now, she’s drawing simple recognizable shapes and reads sight words we draw on it from the Sight Words videos she has repeatedly watched.

Our 3 year old boy has been loving this great classic too - his experience has been impressive to watch and I’m really proud of what he does with it. He writes the alphabet, sometimes neatly from a through z, sometimes either in capitals or lower cased letters and sometimes artistically and wild. And while our little girl reads the sight words, the boy actually writes words like From, Chair, House, his full first and last name and acts out his drawn words.

There’s nothing to dislike about the Doodle Pro, and Fisher-Price sells several styles, colors and models that all do the same fun things but attract different tastes. We bought the Fisher-Price Doodle Pro Classic Blue and Orange, but many more are available. And while it doesn’t actually teach anything new, it gives children an opportunity to express the valuable lessons they have learned while taking chances they can quickly erase. And parents can write, draw and teach in this very simple yet effective learning tool. This is an absolute must-have in all homes with small children.

Kids-Toys-Parents-Love edit: Two years after writing this article, we upgraded to the Fisher-Price Kid-Tough Classic Doodler after years of use finally wore down the Doodle Pro. It was a bit pricier, but it is tougher, wider, and comes with two shape stampers. We bought one each for our son and daughter, and it truly is one of the best kids toys on our list. It allows them to express themselves with uninhibited freedom, over and over and over, creating works of art that truly touched our hearts and strengthened their imaginations! This is one of our most loved and recommended toys on our site!
