Dinosaur puzzles were a good educational opportunity for our toddler. Since our boy had such a love for dinosaurs, we figured we could turn it into and educational experience.
My wife did the research on this and ended up with a couple of puzzles which included Melissa & Doug Dinosaur Chunky Puzzle for kids 2 and up, ImagiPlay Puzzle Me Up Styracosaurus for kids 3 and up, and ImagiPlay Alphabet Dinosaur Puzzle for kids 3 and up.
We had been familiar with the Melissa & Doug puzzles and the Dinosaur Chunky Puzzle set offers the same sense of dependability as the rest of their Chunky Puzzle line. The pieces are big and the dinosaurs cute - very easy to put together for a two year old and offered very little challenge for our three year old. However, when he got the puzzle and was soon bored of it, and it was our then 14 month old daughter who got to playing with them (which drove the boy crazy)! She’d pick them up, ask you to offer an explanation of what it was, then offered a tiny feminine, ”roar” after each description. It’s pretty good for under $9 though.
The Puzzle Me Up - Styracosaurus
is cute, nicely painted and earth friendly, but with only three pieces, it is not challenging at all - especially since it is for kids 3 and up. Cute to look at and have as part of your puzzle collection, and it is also under $9. But it is just okay.
ImagiPlay does make a great Alphabet Dinosaur Puzzle
, which is definitely more challenging with smaller pieces and lower cased letters. It continues to be earth friendly and is nicely painted, and it took our boy a couple of non-consecutive days to figure it out, which is a good thing! When stuck, he’s pretty good at asking for help and with this set, he asked often. And what’s funny is that I had some difficulty figuring out some of the connections; still do!! We had some adult guests come over and it was funny to see them kind of struggle with it as well. When he finally figure it out, you could see in his face a genuine sense of pride and accomplishment - you knew that he felt it was a challenge and was driven to overcome it. Higher priced than the other two dinosaur wood puzzles at about $29, this one was by far the best!
